What is the current "best install" of BeOS. I am new to using BeOS and I am currently running BeOS Developer Edition 1.1, thing is I don't have network connectivity with it so I am using Windows to access the net. (no access for political rather than technical reasons)
I have tried running it on my home system but it won't install. At work I have it on a Dell Optiplex Gx110 which is a decent if somewhat outdated system. It's major flaw is that the graphics suck.
Whats the current fastest hardware that BeOS runs on. Any chance it will run on say a dual Opteron, when they become available?
Thanks,
Ed

First of all, welcome to BeOS
That Edition is good, so is Max 2.1, so is plain R5, though it has less drivers than those two. If i were you, i'd wait a few more weeks and then get Zeta. I'm pretty sure it'll be worth it.
Fastest hardware? Any hardware you run BeOS on, it feels damn fast I'm running it on an AMD XP 1800+. I have no idea about the Opterons.. but it would be nice
Welcome, have fun.

No, it's not available. It isn't finished yet, but soon it will be. Keep looking here at TBJ for a Zeta review, soon.

Well you know how that goes with perfectionists like Bernd... (for BeOS, you can also read Zeta) BeOS cannot be called BeOS if the perfectness of a previous version of BeOS is not overruled by at least double the perfectness. Assuming BeOS is perfect (except for a few stupid bugs like the max. RAM thing), a newer version of BeOS would equal double perfect, with a perfectness obtained through perfect expansion that only BeOS can hold. This includes more perfect apps and more BeOS content than anyone could have expected.
This summarized:
BeOS=perfect
Zeta=moreperfect (which is what Bernd is doing)

The Opteron might just work to run BeOS. AMD is promising full x86 native support along with 2X,4X,8X SMP. I got to tell ya an 8X Beos machine would ROCK. They almost didn't allow BeOS to run on the last batch and it might take a year to get past the next problem. I emailed some real nice tech support at AMD and they replied with some help as to how to get past the SSE on Athlon's and I suppose they would assist in helping with the Opteron. You will not be able to use the full 64bit without the help of a lot of super BeOS techs. Look for easter eggs in tracker as to what processors BeOS might have been ported to. If the OpenBeOS people get super hot they might be able to port BeOS to a 64 bit platform.

They'll answer that in the interview with Bernd (see the topic under "Article Discussion", it's one of the last questions that has been asked)
