I can connect via the modem, connection is stable, the internet applications cannot serve web pages ... I get the sunflower search page.
In terminal, I can PING the xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa address and receive a report;
but, if I ping using the name--service timed out message appears.
The DNS servers have been type in preferences (network & DUN)
Any clues?

Can you ping the DNS servers?
Sounds like your DNS servers are not working.
Can you connect to the same isp with another OS?
If you put in the address bar, do you ger the yahoo.com home page?
Just questions, no solutions yet.

The answers:
"Can you ping the DNS servers? " Yes
"Sounds like your DNS servers are not working.
Can you connect to the same isp with another OS? "
In Windows, no problems.
"If you put in the address bar, do you ger the yahoo.com home page? "
Yes -- minus the linked captions that require DNS to be displayed
It is strange -- I did everything that the BeTips & BeOS Bible specified.
BTW: I am running BeOS Pro 5.0.3
This occurs in BeZilla, Phoenix, and NetPositive.
thanks,

Tried entering a proxy server (from your isp) for net+ and/or other browsers?
It may help.

OK -- Do I use their gateway ip address or one of their DNS servers to be the proxy (I assuming port 8080)?

Make sure you have the blanks filled in on the network panel. Use any word or numbers if you don't know it.
Othwise if you can't use DNS then you will have to make a big hosts file. There is a sample hosts file that shows how. Just put the 50 places you go and be sure you have a search page to find any other page.

OK, here is the scoop....
In the Network preference panel, I had the domain name set to my local intranet.
I changed the setting to my ISP's domain--abra-ca-dabra--I have no problems with DNS.
Now, do I require the domain name for the local intranet--I have not tested the intranet.
I did create a host file containing all members of the local intranet. Will this suffice?
Thanks,
