I have had two ethernet cards, both based on rtl8139. I purchased the second one, it is a D-link 530 or 538, based on recomendations on frizbe.net.
Neither one has worked. I tried just about every version of beos I can find - PersonalMax, Developer, Bone. I have tried turning the PNP off in the bios, telling BE to boot in safe mode. Nothing has worked. My guess is someplace there is an operation to check the card id and manufacturer number and then select the driver and that the newer card numbers aren't in the database.
I admit that this is just a guess on my point. But I have tried all of the suggestions I can find on line. I even tried putting the info directly in the network preferences file and still have had no luck.
By the way both cards worked in Windows Xp and Red Hat 8.1 as rtl8139 cards.

What is the exact PCI id of the card ?
run:
listdev
in a Terminal, search for NIC, and copy the line after that that begins with 'vendor id'.
