I concur, BeShare is truly one of the greatest apps for BeOS!
You can log on and receive 24hr tech support from experienced BeOS veterans, download heaps of files, and much more!
If you haven't done so already, go grab it from bebits today! You won't regret it!

This is great and I plan to get on in the future, but online html forums like this are necessary too in order to get new users. (personally I like a newsreader, but that's a different story) There is no way a newbie is going to stumble across BeShare. More likely he's going to stumble across one of the myriad of Download BeOS 5 PE ads, run into some sort of issue installing it or running an app and then looking for a community online. That's why having an active knowledgeable community forum like this is beneficial to the BeOS movement as a whole.

Just my newbie $.02. I know if I hadn't run across this forum and a few other key sites I would have written Be off to the land of also rans. As it stands I think it has a larger body of useable software than most Linux distros. Once a newbie gets going then getting on BeShare makes sense. Using a browser at least in the beginning gives the newBe user a common starting point he may have had with his Win system. Not to mention he may find a reference to this site in a Google search!

Looking forward is a little scary because hardware support seems to be faltering. I made several attempts to run r5 on an Athlon with a Matrox card and ATA100 drive. I ended up settling for a P2 266/ATA 33 with a Radeon LE.

You'd be surprised at how many newbies put up on BeShare from time to time, trying BeOS for their first time icon_smile.gif
I figure most of the time they find it out by wading through http://www.bebits.com

There are some Matrox drivers on http://www.bebits.com and there is also an ATA 100 driver as well.

I run BeOS on an Athlon with a Geforce 2 and it's fast and stable.

There is an alpha version of a new Matrox driver here:
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/be-hold/BeOS/Matrox.html
There are also Radeon and Audigy driver projects in the early stages right now. I'm sure the new OpenBeOS kernel will support Athlons as well as P4s. Applying the right patches you can get BeOS working on Athlon XPs.

You'll find that BeShare is a good place to meet other BeOS users and developers.

Yeah, BeShare has made my journey back to the BeOS a pleasant AND a painful one.

Pleasant....allowed me to get 600MB of software downloads that weren't all readily available at bebits... Including SUPERDANO which I love.

Pain...Can't access the internet through BONE with Dano.

It makes matters worse because I can't get back on BeShare...but I think I've solved THAT problem. I still have my 500 MB PE edition through windows and I think I'll be able to get that puppy online with no problem. Once there I'll aske people how to fix my DANO/BoNe/Bone dialer issue.

Yes, BeShare ROCKS!!!
