I think that most of the proposed 15 names would be OK. I voted for Menlo, Haiku, Auros, Indigo, and FireBox (in that order). I'm glad this discussion is here, but I have yet to hear any proposed name that (to me) is much better than the five I voted for. Here are my humble opinions about some good recent proposals I've seen (all of which I think are better than Jaffa and perhaps a few others on the list):
Oboe - A little boring; doesn't sound good spoken.
PlanB - Not very professional or original.
Symphony - Not bad, but kinda overused and cliche.
In summary, I really, really like both Menlo and Haiku, and I hope one of them wins.

I think something that could be a suite of products would be cool.
I can't think of anything, but the gist would be something like
"atmosphere" then you could call the releases ozone, oxygen
nitrogen, etc.
thoughts?

When the original submission list was complete there were over 3000 names or so. Where can we review this list? There were some good names on that list but we need access to that list to narrow it down to 50 or so suitable for further review.
Is the original list available?

I must say that so far, the proposed names are mostly better or much better than the 15 that the (in)famous poll has proposed.
Way to go, Beusers!

Of the proposed names on the other TBJ list, my first choice is OS/B, followed by Oboe (well I am a musician), Oxygen and Symphony. KudOS ... wouldn't mind at all, coz it says HATS OFF to the OBOS team of programmers.
OS/B, is short, musical, gives a sense of still being related to BeOS and has rhythm.

Well, in just over a day and a half, we've already collected 59 names.
Now, we only have a few hours before I close this forum, and create the poll of hopefully 100 names. (First come, first polled.)
Please spread the word. We want this to happen, We need this process to happen.

Hey Technix,
I think you're doing a great effort, it seems quite a few people are struggling with the names suggested by OpenBeOS.
You probably already know this, but I would suggest a little caution. OpenBeOS can't use the names if it can get them into legal trouble down the road. So its possible the name that is chosen by the TBJ viewers simple cannot be used.
Perhaps you could check out the feasibility of the names before having the polls?
It would just be such a shame of the effort if the name that turns up can't be used.
Please read this post by Michael (if you haven't already) http://www.freelists.org/archives/openbeos/10-2002/msg00261.html
I think he explains quite well how hard it is. (Plus the fact that he doesn't want to get sued for a bad name )
Lots of luck!
Pieter

Thanx for the kind words.
I'm right at this moment (21:10gmt) writing up the poll of 61 names. Not too shabby considering.
We'll let this first round last until Tuesday, October 29th, 21:00gmt. (It's the latest I can use the internet where I am, a local internet cafe near where I live...)
That should be plenty of time to pare it down to 25 names, and from there, we'll go to 10, and finally by the end of the week, have a top voted name.
So, tell all your friends, colleagues, and the neighbours' dog. We'd like to do this as democractically as possible, and remain open to everyone's opinion.
Yes, there are legal implications with some of the names, hence people should keep that in mind when voting.
beunited.org and openbeos.net are by no means compelled to use the name we come up with, but I just want it for the record that we at least tried to offer another alternative to the (awful) name list that was presented by them.
Thanks all, and good luck.

Yes, Chris has really done a fantastic thing here, kudos! We really needed someone to speak up for the Bepeople, and do something about the OpenBeOS name.
As for the legal aspects, I say that the 15 names originally proposed were problematic way more than the average sensible name proposed in the original pool of 3000 names. In short, I think those 15 names were simply terribly massively copyrighted and trouble-attracting.
