New Refraction Beta Released. Use a Mirror!
30 June 2002, 18:34gmt, by , Senior Journalist
From the playing-with-pixels department...
I'll keep the reading to a minimum, as some of you are anxious to get the latest beta. Well, head on over to the Xentronics Download Page now, and get your fix. It might be a few minutes, as the mirrors are making sure they have the file first, before officially announcing the new Beta.. Smart idea, no? ;)

Refraction At The End Of The Tunnel.
23 June 2002, 12:36gmt,by , Contributing Journalist
From the mirror mirror on the wall department...
mmm... everyone must be thinking.. what is he talking about?
Don't worry, i've not gone (totally) mad. I'm talking about Refraction, which is, of now, Inferno's new name. Yes, that's it, you read it right, Xentronix has finally chosen a new name for their upcoming gfx package, and the name is Refraction. I personally like it, what do you guys think?
Not only that, but they've been busy little bees as well. Refraction will have a new public beta, which should be released by the end of this week. Also, Sample Studio's new Public Beta was just released, bringing it up to version 1.5. Lots of new features and bugs fixed.
You can check all that and more, by clicking right here
These guys rock, they're doing some fine work and I for one, can't wait to buy Refraction, once it comes out.

Translation Kit reaches Alpha.
19 June 2002, 17:58gmt,by, Contributing Journalist
From the babel tower department...
More good news from the OBOS front.
Just one day after assuming the lead of the Translation Kit Team, Michael Wilber has informed that his team has reached Alpha stage, thus being the third team to do so after the OBFS and Storage.
He has even compiled the translation kit into a library and replaced Be's original with it, reporting no problems so far.
Here are a few words by Michael:
Quote:
What we have now is definitely in the early alpha stage, but you could replace Be's libtranslation.so with ours, and you probably wouldn't notice the difference. But, we'd like to do a lot more testing before we would have anyone outside of the team try it. We think there might be some memory leaks or synchronization issues, so we're going to look for those specifically. Also, it would be good to do some performance testing to be sure that our libtranslation.so performs just as well or better than Be's libtranslation.so.
Well guys, another team has reached alpha, and i'm pretty sure others will soon follow. Great work everyone, keep it up.

BeGeistert on Tour.
18 June 2002, 09:15gmt,by, Contributing Journalist
From the meet and greet department...
I got a mail from Bernd Korz (from Inside BeOS and YellowTab fame) letting me know of this coming event.
They will be touring the north of Germany between Hamburg and Bremen, from August 1st to August 4th. The price per night, per person will be of 20, which includes dinner (not bad at all).
An objective will be to get together as much OBOS developers as possible and start a coding event which will culminate in October's BeGeistert, in Duesseldorf. A LAN party is also in their goals.
Bernd also had a juicy bit to tell us, he mentioned BeOS NG which he hopes to "show Beta 1 very soon, the latest at our event". That will be interesting, no doubt about it.
Great initiative, the Tour, as i'm sure everyone agrees. For more info about the event, you can contact
UPDATE: Bernd has sent me a link to a page that contains all the information you need to know about the Tour and it's organization. If you scroll down a bit you can see the information in english. Click here
UPDATE 2: Charlie Clark has asked me to clarify a couple of things. First, the BeGeistert Team will not be touring. This event is promoted by Bernd, who asked the BeGeistert if they could use their name, which was promptly granted. The BeGeister we all came to love will be held, as usual, in Düsseldorf, from October 18th to 20th. It will be BeGeistert "009 - Step by step". Thanks for clearing that up Charlie

OpenBeOS newsletter #20.
18 June 2002, 09:00gmt,by, Contributing Journalist
From the EXTRA! EXTRA! department...
It's out folks, OBOS newsletter numero (yes, portuguese) 20, so go read it.
The articles in this number are courtesy of Daniel Reinhold, who talks about gcc options (this article is huge!) and coding styles, and Michael Phipps, who rants (in a good way of course) about OBOS possible ways of distribution. I might add, a very interesting read, which comes in a timely fashion shortly after BeUnited's "The Vision".
For all you out there who want to read it all, head over to the OBOS site

EDIROL DV-7R Review.
18 June 2002, 00:56gmt,by, Contributing Journalist
From the video ga-ga department...
Computer video has made a 5 pages review of the BeOS-based one-box video editor Edirol DV-7.
The system runs BeOS, without the Deskbar and the Tracker, and Edirol's own produced video editing software called Video Canvas DV-7, which is up to version 1.5.
One item of the review that was noted as their mention of OBOS, which according to the reviewer aims to "continue the revolution started by Be Inc". Nice.
An interesting read, and an important exposition of Edirol's work and BeOS. Like they say, any publicity is good publicity.

BlueEyed OS update.
16 June 2002, 12:15gmt,by, Contributing Journalist
From the several flavours department...
The B.E.OS (notice the dots) site has been updated last week. Seems like they also are making good progress.
Check it out:
Quote:
No great announce today, B.E.OS is still on the long road of bugfixes. Only 2 new classes appeared : BMessageFilter & BAlert. The compilation of OpenTracker always shows us 'undefined symbols', but BMenu related classes are the main cause. We are thinking about a binary release soon, which would contain: - The kernel_server + libroot.so - The app_server + libbe.so + libtranslation.so - Small 'Demos' If the Network Kit is completed, Muscle and BeShare could be in the 'pack', we will see; and if (luckily) the new architecture of the app_server is ready ......
Alternatives are always good, so let's keep an eye on their site, which you can reach right here

It's ALIVE!!!
15 June 2002, 18:54gmt,by, Contributing Journalist
From the wow wow wow department...
Ok, this is just... awesome... it might not seem like a bit step, but using a famous line, it's a "giant leap" for OpenBeOS.
David Reid (and later Bruno Albuquerque) have booted successfully the OpenBeOS Kernel. David knows better than I do what was involved. Earlier today he wrote:
Quote:
The first successful boot of the OpenBeOS kernel took place earlier today and has just been confirmed by Bruno Albuquerque! So, it's now possible to simply check out the code and type Jam and you'll build a kernel! Build instructions aren't available as the kernel still doesn't do much
What? Want to see it? Sure, just click here
Awesome.. just awesome.. but keep in mind, there is still a lot of work to be done...

Forum Follies Finally Fixed...Phew!
10 June 2002, 16:15gmt, by , Senior Journalist
From the phonetics department...
We fixed the weird registration/login problem. Seems that the password hash wasn't being updated correctly in the database.
The following people had to be deleted from the user database in order to fix the problem.. You'll have to re-register.
- Nighthawk
- Franxico
- mazziero
- lethargy
Sorry about that, but at least you didn't have any posts anyhow... ;)
Thanks for all your patience, to everyone. You may now register properly, and post in the forums! See you there!
Net++...No, Not A Typo
10 June 2002, 11:47gmt,by, Contributing Journalist
From the sneak peek department...
Well, this is something many of us thought about...
And now it's happening... there's a new browser on the town, and it's name is Net++. What is it you say? It's a browser similar to Net+, and aims at the same speed of use, but with the Gecko engine. Yes, that's right, Mozila's engine.
Developing this small (as in lightweight) wonder is a small group of BeOS enthusiasts, including a few ex-Be, Inc engineers.
Here's a first screenshot, with just the interface, still without the Gecko engine.
I'm sure many agree... i can't wait to try this one out!
P.S.: I'd like to thank BGA for the heads up on this one.

OBFS New Test Results
8 June 2002, 19:31gmt, by, Contributing Journalist
From the faster-than-the-fastest department...
Well, here they are, straight from the horse's mouth, or should i say, Bruno Albuquer- que's (BGA) computer. Here are the results:
Quote:
Test 1 (copies 431 small files, about 1.8MB total
Total: 20.9 s (0.5s transactions, 20.4s syncs)
BFS: 23s (2.3s transactions, 20.9s syncs)
Test 2 (copies 2447 small files, about 38.5MB total)
Total: 3m 35.7s (3m 3.8s transactions, 31.8s sync)
BFS: 3m 31s (3m 15s transactions, 16s sync)
There you have it, OBFS is oficially now _faster_ than BFS, though, as Bruno says, this is a specific test, they still need to do other tests.
I'm sure everyone agrees, this is awesome work, keep it up!

Frizbe Closes Shop.
4 June 2002, 18:09gmt, by , Contributing Journalist
From the what-is-the-matrix department...
Yes, another BeOS shop closes. With the state of things, not that surprising. But not all things are black, here are a couple of quotes from the site:
Quote:
Q: Will the store return?
A: I'd like it too. around the time OpenBeOS is close to their first official R1 release, I'll re-evaluate where I stand and look at getting back into things.
and
Quote:
Q: Do you have any leftover Inventory you want to sell for cheap?
A: Yes! I have a rather large credit card bill from this venture and I have a number of items I would like to no longer have taking up space in my garage. Shortly I'll be putting up a list of items that anyone can send me an email making me any offer they want for whatever they are interested in.
So this one means, if you see something you want to grab, go for it, you'll not only be getting what you want but also helping Scott.
Scott also mentions that this will not affect the Hardware Matrix, quite possibly just the opposite.
We here at TBJ thank Scott for the all the great work he's been doing for BeOS and it's users. Here's to better days.

TuneTracker 2 Radio Automation System Released.
4 June 2002, 13:24gmt, by , Senior Journalist
From the big-dogs department...
Don't know how this slipped by us at TBJ, but on June 1st, the TuneTracker radio automation system has seen another major release.
The new release brings with it a number of changes, most significantly:
- Advanced TuneStacker 2 Music Selection Software...Included
- Advanced TimeTracker Background Recording Software...Included
- Fast CSacker Report Generator...Included
To quote from their website:
"This rivals my (other station's) $15,000 system," says Mike Chandler of WOBS, Florida of the $149.95 TuneTracker System, who has been using the Beta version for months. "As a matter of fact, it has less hiccups."
We at TBJ think this is great news for all BeOS users, as it shows yet another fine, committed developer who has not given up on the dream of using BeOS in daily work. Way to go Dane, and crew!

OBFS Making Huge Strides.
4 June 2002, 12:46gmt, by , Contributing Journalist
From the iron-ball department...
What can i say... Axel rocks!!! (oh, yeah, and BGA too, sort of).. I guess chaining down your coder to an iron ball is a good idea afterall.
Two big milestones reached by the OBFS team in just a couple a days. First, full journaling was implemented, though not fully tested, it's in a working mode. And then, when fan's mouths were still agasp, Live Queries were implemented as well.
OpenBeOS' coders (in general) are making a dream come true.

Well, after struggling for months with writing custom code behind the scenes to add forum support, we decided instead to go ahead and use a third party, open-source forum sytem, named phpBB2. It's pretty new at the moment, but we have been testing it, and it seems fairly stable for our needs.
Go ahead, check it out, or skip straight to the registration page now.
We will be linking our stories to the Article Discussion forum soon, among other changes to come. Thanks to everyone involved who has helped us over the past few months. There is more changes afoot for TBJ, all of your hard work has helped enourmously. Thank you!
